Lake Trout

Deep-water char found in cold, clear lakes like Cold Lake and Lake Minnewanka. Can grow to massive sizes.

Rainbow Trout
Oncorhynchus mykiss
The most commonly stocked trout in Alberta potholes. Flashy, fights hard, and accessible to everyone.

Bull Trout
Salvelinus confluentus
Alberta's Provincial Fish. A threatened species found in pristine cold mountain streams. Catch and Release only.

Cutthroat Trout
Oncorhynchus clarkii
Native to the eastern slopes of the Rockies. Named for the red slash under their jaw.

Brook Trout
Salvelinus fontinalis
Introduced char species often found in beaver ponds and small mountain streams. Beautiful coloration.

Lake Whitefish
Coregonus clupeaformis
Abundant in many lakes. Often overlooked by anglers but provides a great commercial and sport fishery.

Lota lota
Also known as Ling cod or freshwater cod. Unique appearance and active primarily in winter and at night.
