Habitat

Found in high mountain streams and lakes of the eastern slopes. Prefer cold, clear water with clean gravel for spawning. Often share habitat with bull trout. Pure westslope cutthroat are increasingly rare due to hybridization.

Seasonal Patterns

Spring: Post-runoff feeding in rivers. Summer: High mountain lakes become accessible; stream fish in cool pools. Fall: Feeding heavily before winter. Winter: Deep pools in rivers; lakes may be ice-covered.

Fishing Techniques

  • Fly fishing: Dry flies and nymphs in streams; streamers in lakes
  • Spin fishing: Small spinners and spoons
  • Float fishing: Small jigs or bait under indicator

Best Lures

  • Panther Martin spinners (#0-#1)
  • Small Mepps and Blue Fox
  • Dry flies (Adams, Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulator)
  • Nymphs (Prince, Pheasant Tail, Hare's Ear)

Best Bait

  • Check regulations—bait often prohibited in cutthroat waters
  • Where allowed: worms, grasshoppers

Alberta Regulations

Highly protected in many waters. Many streams are catch and release only. Size and bag limits vary widely. Bait restrictions common. Some waters closed entirely to protect pure-strain populations.

Identification

Pro Tips

  • Approach streams carefully—cutthroat are spooky in clear water
  • Fish early morning and evening for best success
  • Match the hatch—observe what insects are on the water
  • Use light tippet (3-4X) and delicate presentations
  • Report any tagged fish to Alberta Fish & Wildlife
