Rainbow Trout

Habitat

Stocked in over 240+ pothole lakes across Alberta. Also found in cold streams and rivers. Prefer water temperatures 10-18°C (50-65°F). Often cruising near weed edges or in open water.

Seasonal Patterns

Spring: Active near surface as water warms. Summer: Deeper in lakes to stay cool; early morning best. Fall: Aggressive feeding before winter. Winter: Ice fishing is productive on stocked lakes.

Fishing Techniques

  • Float fishing: Bobber with bait or small jig suspended
  • Casting: Spinners, spoons, and small crankbaits
  • Fly fishing: Dry flies, nymphs, and streamers
  • Trolling: Small spoons and plugs along weed edges

Alberta Regulations

Generally 5 fish per day on stocked lakes. Some catch-and-release waters exist. Many stocked fish are triploid (sterile). Bait is usually allowed on stocked lakes.

Identification

Pink-red stripe along lateral line. Black spots on back, dorsal, and tail. Silvery sides. Square tail.

  • Fresh PowerBait floating off the bottom is deadly on stocked trout
  • Use light line (4-6 lb) and small hooks
  • Stocked trout cruise in patterns—watch for surface activity
  • Spring and fall offer the best action as temperatures are optimal
  • Electric motors only on many trout lakes—check regulations
