Brook Trout
Salvelinus fontinalis
Introduced char species often found in beaver ponds and small mountain streams. Beautiful coloration.
Habitat
Found in cold streams, beaver ponds, and some mountain lakes. Prefer water under 18°C (65°F). Often thrive in small headwater streams where other trout cannot survive. Can tolerate more acidic water than other salmonids.
Seasonal Patterns
Spring: Active as water warms; feeding in riffles. Summer: Seeking cold water inflows and deep pools. Fall: Spawning in tributary streams (September-November). Winter: Slow but will bite through ice.
Fishing Techniques
- Fly fishing: Small dry flies and nymphs
- Spin fishing: Ultra-light gear with tiny spinners
- Bait fishing: Worms under bobber in beaver ponds
Best Lures
- Tiny spinners (#00-#1)
- Small spoons (1/8 oz)
- Dry flies (Stimulator, Royal Wulff, Parachute Adams)
- Nymphs (small stoneflies, caddis)
Best Bait
- Small worms and dew worms
- Grasshoppers
- Maggots
Alberta Regulations
Limits vary by waterbody. Generally more liberal than native trout. Some streams have reduced limits to protect native cutthroat. Check specific regulations.

Worm-like markings (vermiculations) on back. Red spots with blue halos. White leading edge on lower fins. Orange-red belly in spawning males.
Pro Tips
- Fish small and stealthy—brookies are in small water
- Look for undercut banks and overhanging vegetation
- Beaver ponds often hold surprising numbers of brook trout
- Fall spawning colors make them incredibly beautiful—photograph and release large ones
- They're often overpopulated; keeping some can improve average size
Size Information
Average Size: 0.15-0.3 kg (6-12 oz) in streams; larger in lakes and ponds
