Winter Boat Storage: Indoor vs Outdoor in Alberta

Alberta winters are brutal. Where and how you store your boat determines whether it emerges in spring ready to run—or ready for expensive repairs.

Indoor Heated Storage

The gold standard. Temperature-controlled buildings prevent condensation, protect gel coat, and keep critters out.

  • Cost: $150-400/month depending on location and boat size
  • Pros: Best protection, easy spring commissioning, no shrink wrap needed
  • Cons: Expensive, limited availability, waitlists are common

Indoor Unheated (Cold Storage)

A step down from heated storage, but still excellent protection from UV, precipitation, and most pests.

  • Cost: $75-200/month
  • Pros: Much cheaper than heated, still protected
  • Cons: Temperature swings cause condensation; ensure winterization is complete

Outdoor with Shrink Wrap

Professional shrink wrapping creates a protective cocoon. Add a dehumidifier or desiccant packs.

  • Cost: $300-600 for wrapping, plus storage fees ($50-100/month or free at home)
  • Pros: Affordable, can store at home
  • Cons: UV damage over time, must be properly ventilated, wrap can tear in wind

Key Winterization Steps

  1. Drain all water from engine, heater core, and raw water systems
  2. Fog the engine or add fuel stabilizer
  3. Disconnect and charge batteries monthly
  4. Remove drain plugs and leave open
  5. Clean and wax gel coat before covering
Don't Skip Winterization: A cracked block or frozen raw water pump costs thousands. Proper winter prep costs a few hundred.
