Your propeller is the final link in your drivetrain. When it's compromised, your entire boat suffers. Here are the warning signs every boater should recognize.
1. Vibration at Cruising Speed
A smooth-running boat should feel smooth. If you notice a new vibration through the steering wheel, hull, or engine, your prop is likely out of balance. This can be caused by a bent blade, a ding, or material loss from cavitation erosion.
2. Reduced Top Speed
If your boat used to hit 45 mph and now tops out at 38, a damaged prop could be the culprit. Bent or eroded blades can't grab water efficiently, robbing you of thrust.
3. Poor Fuel Economy
A damaged prop forces your engine to work harder to achieve the same results. If you're burning more fuel on the same routes, inspect your prop.
4. Difficulty Getting on Plane
A prop with bent blades or incorrect pitch will struggle to lift the bow. If your hole shot is sluggish compared to before, it's time for an inspection.
5. Visible Damage
This seems obvious, but many boaters don't inspect their prop regularly. Check for nicks, dings, bent blade tips, and signs of corrosion or pitting. Even small defects can cause big performance issues.
