Alberta's Hidden Lakes: 5 Quiet Gems Without Crowds

Sylvan Lake on a long weekend? No thanks. These lesser-known Alberta lakes offer solitude, good fishing, and room to breathe.

1. Lac la Nonne

Just 90 minutes northwest of Edmonton, Lac la Nonne offers excellent walleye and pike fishing with far fewer boats than Pigeon or Wabamun. The Provincial Recreation Area has a solid boat launch and campground.

2. Fawcett Lake

West of Lesser Slave Lake, Fawcett flies under the radar. Strong walleye numbers and quiet waters make it a local favourite. Access via Highway 2 and secondary roads.

3. Marie Lake

Near Cold Lake, Marie is famous among those who know it for trophy burbot (ling cod) and easy walleye. Deep, clear water and minimal development.

4. Pine Lake (Red Deer)

Yes, it's near Red Deer, but Pine Lake is much quieter than Sylvan. Spring-fed, deep, and scenic—camping at Pine Lake Provincial Park is a treat.

5. Chain Lakes

South of Calgary in the foothills, Chain Lakes offers mountain views and stocked trout. Electric motors encouraged, which keeps it peaceful.

Tips for Hidden Lake Success

  • Check recent fishing reports on iHunter or Alberta Outdoorsmen forums
  • Bring everything you need—services may be limited
  • Respect the locals; these spots stay quiet because word doesn't spread
